Do I need Payroll Corrector to correct e-filed returns?

e-filed via the FIRE system

Payroll Corrector is not needed.

  1. Open the 1099.
  2. Be aware that correcting the 1099 will overwrite the original.  Print copy of original first if needed for your records.
    Select the Corrected box, make the needed correction and Save.
  3. Create a corrected 1099 file in Payroll System’s “Create 1098/1099/W-2G E-file/MagMedia file” module (Nickname: 1099 E-file module) and upload to IRS FIRE website (Note: this presumes the original was also e-filed on the FIRE website).

Payroll Corrector is not needed. The user must manually make the correction through the IRS portal. See 1099 E-Filing: Submitting IRIS CSV Portal corrections.

Paper filed

Payroll Corrector is needed for Corrected W-2's. Payroll Corrector is not needed for Corrected 1099’s.

Paper-filing of Corrected Information returns is generally not allowed if the Original forms were e-filed.

W-2's

A W-2c form must be created using Payroll Corrector.
