Logging into IRS FIRE with a Company Name that matches IRS records

Eric Updated by Eric

This article assumes you are on the IRS FIRE login page or Create Account page.

The IRS FIRE login page is notoriously sensitive about the Company Name. It must match character for character with IRS records. On the surface it sounds simple. But what about punctuation, spaces, special characters, middle initials, DBA's, name changes, and even IRS typos? This guide will help sort it out.

If you are able to login with your Company Name, make careful note of how you entered it because you will again have to enter it exactly the same each time you login.
  1. Double-check that the Company Name being input matches IRS records.
    1. Generally, the business name must exactly match the business name that was used on the IR application.
    2. Verify that every single character matches the IRS record, including spaces, punctuation, and middle initial.
    3. Do not input your DBA, even if your DBA shows in your IRS E-Services account alongside Application Type IR TCC. The legal business name is the one to use.
    4. Sole proprietors: your individual name is usually your legal business name. Whether to include your middle initial depends on if it is associated with your FEIN, which is also how it should have been entered on your IR application for FIRE TCC.
      LLC or treated as Corp
If you are a Sole Proprietor but are a single member LLC with employees, or have elected to be treated as an S-Corp or Corporation for income taxes, then the IRS generally requires you to have attained a NEW FEIN number. In that case, your Legal Business Name associated with your FEIN is what should have been entered on your IR Application, and that would be used here also for your FIRE System account.
  2. Input the Company Name that matches IRS records and submit it. If that still fails, go to the next step.
  3. Re-input the Company Name in all uppercase without punctuation or special characters other than ampersand (&) and hyphen and submit it. If that fails, go to the next step.
  4. Input the Company Name that is associated with your FEIN, even if it is slightly different than on your IR application and submit it. If that fails, go to the next step.
  5. Input your DBA instead of your legal business name and submit it. If that fails, go to the next step.
  6. Try creating a new account.
  7. Have a Responsible Official call FIRE at 866-455-7438.
