When can I earn paid vacation days?

Introduction

Regular full-time employees are eligible to earn and use paid vacation days. The definition of a full-time employee is based on the same eligibility requirements as paid holidays (regularly scheduled for and working 34 hours per week).

Eligibility

  • Full-time employees are eligible for paid vacation after being continuously employed for one full year. The amount of paid vacation days earned is based upon 2000 hours worked per calendar year.
  • After one year of full-time service, an employee will receive up to 10 vacation days per calendar year.
  • Employees with 5 years of full-time service will receive up to 15 days vacation per calendar year.
  • Employees with 15 years of full-time service will receive up to 20 days vacation per calendar year.

Accrual of Vacation Time

  • Vacation is accrued only during full-time hours worked—not during vacation, holidays, unpaid leave, or hours worked as a part-time employee.
  • Vacation can accrue up to a maximum of 40 days.
Once this cap is reached, no further vacation will accrue until some vacation is used. There is no retroactive grant of vacation compensation for the period of time the accrued vacation compensation was at the cap without a corporate officer’s approval.

Calculation of Vacation Time

Vacation is calculated based on hours worked the previous calendar year. First-year employees may use accrued vacation after their anniversary date; other employees may use accrued vacation after January 1st.

The formula for computing earned vacation time is as follows:

  1. Hours worked the previous calendar year as a full-time employee (excluding vacation, holidays, and hours worked as a part-time employee). If result is greater than 2000, use 2000.
  2. Divide result by 2000.
  3. Multiply result by 10, 15, or 20, depending upon longevity of employment. Round up to the nearest whole day.

Use of Vacation Time

  • Paid vacation time must be used in minimum increments of 1 day.
  • Requests for vacation time should be submitted at least 5 working days beforehand.
Requests will be reviewed based on a number of factors, including business needs and staffing requirements. Employees who are needed during our busier times, such as December and January, should not expect vacation to be granted.
  • Vacation pay is paid at the employee's base pay rate at the time of vacation. It does not include overtime, commissions or bonuses.

Termination of Employment

When your employment relationship with the Company ends, you will be paid for accrued unused vacation days on a pro rata basis.

Return to Employment

If an employee who met the full-time service requirement for paid vacation when previously employed by CFS is subsequently rehired within a period of five years, that employee will become eligible for vacation benefits upon returning to full-time status, based on the longevity of service previously attained.
