IRS requires new data to be included in business payroll tax return e-files

Eric Updated by Eric

Starting January 13 2026, the IRS requires new data elements to be included in efiles of 940, 941, 943, 944, 945, and related corrections, including:

  • Vendor Control Number (VCN). A unique code automatically generated by CFS and stored for the IRS upon review.
  • IP Address. The IP address used by the filer. Auto-detected by Payroll System in most cases.
  • Device ID. A unique code identifying the computer being used to generate the file. Auto-generated by Payroll System.
  • Banking Account and Routing numbers. Optional, unless a direct deposit is desired. Input by the user on the related form.

Most of this data will be generated automatically by CFS Payroll System. In some cases it may not be possible to detect the IP address, for example if a VPN or other security software is used. See Retrieving Your External IPv4 Address.
